The river Krishna flows through the sanctuary at a distance of 130 km. Multipurpose reservoirs, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar, which are important sources of irrigation and power in the state are in the sanctuary. The reservoirs and temples of Srisailam are a major tourist attraction and pilgrimage for people all over the country and abroad.

Located in Nallamalai Hill ranges, an offshoot of the Eastern Ghats, with cliffs, canyons, ridges and plateaus, with a great variety of flora and fauna, the NST protects a large part of the ecological system, once was flourishing here.
